Guide Books Travel Literature and More |
There are no membership fees to belong to the TPA. Publishers choose the activities they wish to participate in--it's that simple. The activities include the following Trade Shows: BookExpo America (BEA), American Library Assn (ALA), sometimes the Public Library Assn (PLA); and production of an Annual Catalog.
Trade Shows: Publishers can display as many titles as they wish at BEA, ALA and PLA.
We buy a mailing list of show attendees visiting our booth (via a lead retrieval system) and provide this information in the form of an Excel file to all publishers with books on display in our booth. We also provide a ready-to-use mailing label file in Word with all contacts from the mailing list. Before the Excel and Word files with contact information is emailed, we notify publishers about key contacts (attendees) who expressed specific interest in one or more of their titles, so they can market to these contacts immediately. These marketing perks are worth the display costs alone.
We give all displayed titles to the winner (bookseller at BEA; librarian at ALA and PLA) of a drawing after the show is over. Interest in winning the display is high and booth attendance is correspondingly increased. The winner is chosen before we leave the show from a drawing (via the lead retrieval data), and books are mailed to the winner from the show site.
The winner at each show is featured on our website:
http://www.travelpubs.com (scroll down the page and click on BEA, PLA or ALA highlights).
Catalog:
We publish an annual catalog early in the year. Some pubs take 2 ads as facing pages. There are 2 special spots--the inside covers.
In addition to giving out catalogs at the book shows, we mail catalogs to all travel stores, independent travel stores with significant travel sections, travel media (newspapers/magazines/newsletters/online travel media/free lance writers/travel media (TV/radio), librarians buying travel (mailing to libraries in all US cities with populations of 50,000 or greater), and more. Our mailing lists obtained from the trade shows of the previous year are also used. We no longer mail out catalogs except for the above mailings. This keeps the costs down, saves trees--and since the catalog is online, anyone can view it.
